The first Santa Barbara Revels SALON provided a wonderful opportunity for our audience and supporters to meet and mingle in the lovely Casa Covarrubias at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Built in 1817, the Casa is one of the oldest existing in our community, an inviting environment in which to enjoy wine, hors d’oeuvres, conversation and entertainment. Our musical guests were Sol y Mar, a four-person harp and string ensemble that plays the traditional “Son Jarocho” instruments of Veracruz, Mexico. Many of the “sones” in their repertoire date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Our special speaker was Patrick Swanson, Artistic Director of Revels, Inc, our parent company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A stage director with wide experience in England and the US, he worked for many years with the legendary Founder of Revels, the late John Langstaff. Swanson shared his experiences, telling us about the growth of Revels in nine other cities around the country and the exciting potential for events and activities with Santa Barbara Revels.
